An Idiots Guide to DA (and not sucking)

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 12, 2011, 6:33 PM

Seriously, I say that in the kindest way possible. Not that I'm calling anyone an idiot or that anyone sucks, not at all, but I do see things around DA that I think...well, that it's common sense NOT to do. Or...maybe it's not so common sense? In any case, here's a short education on some things to avoid during your stay on DA, just cuz I love ya!

Before we begin let me show you the mathematical equation of bad choices

Bad choices=drama
attention=negative attention
negative attention= getting trolled
trolled= more drama
more drama=more trolling....

and so and so forth until someone baws off DA, has an ED article, and/or switches accounts to escape the drama only to have it follow.

Want to avoid all that? There's some easy steps!!

1- Always check a users main page for information before asking questions pertaining to requests, art trades, or commissions. Most deviants have this information easily accessible on their main page. Commenting when the answer is clearly available to everyone else reflects pretty badly on you.

2- Do not go around to strangers that don't watch you to tell them it's your birthday. It's another way of 'begging' for gifts from people and it's kinda tasteless and won't earn you any respect =/ DA makes birthdays public to your watchers, and they are the people who would want to know and might want to do something for you.

3- It's generally not a good idea to voice your grievances with other users in your journals, particularly if linking and naming names is involved. It stirs drama, and most people get turned off by it. If you feel the need to vent, get on yahoo, aim, msn or whatever and vent to your friends.

4- While we're on the subject of doing things privately, if someone steals your work, or if you notice an art thief, the best way to deal with it is to quietly report it yourself and ask some friends to do the same. Again, avoid drama. Drama attracts trolls.

5- Dealing with Trolls!! :la: DO NOT FEED THEM!! If you feed them, they know they can get what they want from you and will come to chew often.That means do not make journals and polls when someones is 'mean to you', do not blog in your club or group, and do not respond to them no matter what it is they say. Even blocking can backfire because that's even giving them a 'reply' of sorts. Use block if you want to, certainly, but I find it's not always needed.

6- Chain mail is annoying and can be flagged. Rule of thumb? Don't do it unless you know the other user appreciates those kinds of messages, and certainly don't do it to a person you've never spoken to or are unfamiliar with.

7- If you haven't already please go make yourself familiar with the Terms of Service. Many problems new users have can be avoided by reading what they clicked when they joined. Such as the difference between DA and Photobucket

8- If you leave a comment that is a flame, negative, or degrading, be prepared for the possibility that the person receiving it hasn't learned how to just delete and retaliates.

9- It's best to just delete negative comments. Don't bother replying, just stirs drama.

10- It's okay if someone feels differently than you on something you feel strongly about. The best way to handle this though is to not get into in the first place. If you feel you can do it maturely, go ahead, but if you find it hard, then know yourself well enough when to speak, when to keep quiet, and when to just delete the comment you got.

That's what I have for now <3 If anything else comes to mind I'll add! Happy DAing!

I totally agree with you on this (although, I will admit that Ive vented through my journal a while ago ^^; learned the hard way that what I was doing was stupid, and I havent done it since XD;;; ).
I may re-post this in my journal, so people that watch me can see this. You really thought it through, and I really like how its worded. DeviantArt is a site for art, and creativity, not drama. :)
You go girl! :la:

Since i'm new here, this sure helped a lot. Thanks! I definitively HATE drama, and I don't want to be the cause. If I get stuck, I'll come right back! ^^

One of these situations happened when I first Joined DA and Some jerk said that he hated pokemon and wanted them all dead. I wasn't really ticked but I flammed him saying that he shouldn't do that.
I finally learned how to deleat coments and thought "screw you and the boat you rode in on" and now I don't have to deal with the punk anymore.
Well I kinda knew all of this but then again I'm pretty old on this site but it's never a bad thing to see helpful tips on how to avoid trolls! You learn something new everyday!
